We all know that Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle, but working in a bar you get hit with all sorts of crackpot philosophy. It seems after 34 pints everyone knows the meaning of life, it’s just that they’ve forgotten it by the time they wake up in the morning.

So, I decided that a bar and philosophical discussion are logical bedfellows. As such, Goodbye Blue Monday is proud to announce our very first Bar Room Philosophy evening this Monday June 28 at 6pm.

Michael Couch from the University of Canterbury will be discussing:

Equality vs. Liberty vs. Efficiency in Education

“New Zealand has a perennial anxiety about the accepted structure and role for education. Each significant change in the underlying educational philosophy since the foundational 1877 legislation has been met with significant discontent. Although this anxiety reflects political tensions (e.g. conservative vs. liberal), there is also constant philosophical tensions between desired goals and policy outcomes.

In particular, egalitarian sentiment has been regularly accompanied by utilitarian policies, with liberty issues constantly in the background.”

If this sounds like you, then come down and support what we think is a pretty cool event to be happening in a bar.
